Accessories are what take an O gauge layout from a loop of track to a complete operating railroad. From the transformer that powers everything to the signals, crossing gates, and operating accessories that bring the scene to life, every detail matters. TrainFinder compares accessory prices across every seller we track, so you can equip your layout without overspending.

Power & Transformers

The transformer is the foundation of any O gauge layout. For beginners, the wall-pack power supplies included with train sets are sufficient to run a single loop. As your layout grows, you will need more power. The Lionel CW-80 is a popular upgrade for mid-size layouts. For serious operators running multiple trains with command control, the Lionel ZW-L or dedicated PowerHouse bricks provide the wattage needed to run Legacy and TMCC systems at full capacity. MTH's Z-4000 is the go-to transformer for DCS operators.

Signals & Trackside Details

Block signals, searchlight signals, semaphores, and crossing gates add realism and function to your layout. Modern O gauge signals from Lionel feature automatic train detection and can change from green to red as a train enters a block. Crossing gates with flashing lights and bell sounds activate when a train approaches. These accessories are available in both traditional postwar designs and modern scale-detailed versions.

Operating Accessories

Operating accessories are a hallmark of O gauge railroading. Coal loaders, log loaders, barrel loaders, cattle pens, icing stations, and magnetic cranes interact directly with your rolling stock to simulate real railroad operations. Lionel has produced these interactive accessories since the postwar era, and modern versions add sound effects and command control integration. Collectors prize both original postwar accessories and their modern reproductions.

Layout Electronics

Beyond traditional accessories, modern O gauge layouts use a range of electronics: TMCC and Legacy base units for command control, DCS signal processors for MTH trains, block detection modules, automatic reversing units, and layout lighting controllers. These components make complex operations possible and are essential for multi-train layouts. Prices vary significantly between sellers — a Legacy base unit might be $50 less at one dealer than another.
