Track is the foundation of every layout, and it is one of the areas where price comparison pays off the most. Whether you need a few sections to expand a loop or enough track to fill a dedicated train room, TrainFinder helps you find the best prices on every major O gauge track system from all the sellers we monitor.

Lionel FasTrack

FasTrack is Lionel's modern O gauge track system, introduced in 2003. It features an integrated roadbed with a realistic ballast profile, solid interlocking rail connections, and a wide range of geometry options including O-36, O-48, O-60, and O-72 curves. FasTrack is the most popular choice for new layouts because it looks good, goes together quickly, and is easy to disassemble and reconfigure. Switches, crossings, and specialty sections are all available. Pricing varies significantly across dealers — buying track in bulk can save 15-25% compared to single-section retail.

Traditional Tubular Track

The classic three-rail tubular track has been the standard since the early days of O gauge. It is inexpensive, especially on the used market where clean sections can be found for a dollar or two each. Tubular track is available in O-31, O-42, and O-54 curves, along with standard and long straights. Many operators use tubular track for temporary floor layouts, Christmas tree displays, and as a budget-friendly way to build large layouts. Lionel, Marx, and K-Line all produced compatible tubular track over the decades.

Switches & Turnouts

Switches are the most expensive individual track components but are essential for any layout beyond a simple oval. FasTrack switches come in manual and remote-control versions. Ross Custom Switches produces premium hand-assembled turnouts that are favored by serious layout builders for their reliability and smooth operation. Atlas O switches offer excellent quality for 2-rail operators. The price difference between sellers on switches can be $20-$40 per unit — and a typical layout might need 6-12 switches, so comparison shopping here has real impact.

Planning Your Track Purchase

Before buying track, sketch out your layout plan. Free software like SCARM and RR-Track can help you calculate exactly how many straight sections, curves, and switches you need. Once you have a parts list, use TrainFinder to compare prices across sellers. Some dealers offer better prices on individual sections while others have better deals on bulk packs. Checking both new and used options can stretch your track budget significantly.
