Prewar

1900–1942

The golden age of tinplate trains. Lionel, American Flyer, and Ives produced colorful, heavy-gauge trains that are now highly collectible.

Postwar

1945–1969

The most beloved era of O gauge. Iconic Lionel models, Magne-Traction, smoke units, and operating cars defined a generation of train enthusiasts.

MPC Era

1970–1986

General Mills took over Lionel production. Early quality dipped, but late MPC trains are undervalued gems offering excellent running quality at low prices.

LTI / Lionel Trains Inc.

1986–1995

Richard Kughn revitalized Lionel with improved detail, die-cast construction, and the debut of Railsounds electronic sound systems.

Modern Era

1995–Present

TMCC, Legacy, and Proto-Sound command control. The best detail, sound, and running quality ever produced in O gauge. Lionel, MTH, and Atlas lead the market.

Vintage

Pre-1970

A broad category covering prewar and postwar trains. Value depends on rarity, condition, and original packaging. Authentication is key.
