Atlas O Buying Guide: Master vs Trainman Lines
10 min read
Atlas is one of the most respected names in model railroading, known primarily for their track and HO scale products. But Atlas also makes a serious line of O gauge trains under the Atlas O brand. If you are looking for scale-accurate O gauge locomotives and rolling stock — particularly 2-rail — Atlas deserves a close look. This guide covers their product lines, pricing, and how to make smart buying decisions.
Who Is Atlas?
Atlas Model Railroad Company was founded in 1924 in Newark, New Jersey, originally as a maker of model railroad track and accessories. Over the decades, Atlas expanded into locomotives and rolling stock across multiple scales. Their O gauge division, Atlas O, focuses on scale-accurate products aimed at serious modelers and operators rather than the toy train market.
Atlas O is particularly important in the 2-rail O scale community, where they are one of the few manufacturers offering ready-to-run locomotives and cars. They also produce 3-rail versions of most products for traditional O gauge operators.
The Two Product Lines
Atlas O organizes their train products into two distinct tiers:
Atlas O Master Line
The Master Line is Atlas O's premium tier. These are highly detailed, scale-accurate models with die-cast metal construction, fine detail parts, and (on equipped models) sound systems. Master Line locomotives are built for serious modelers who want accuracy and quality above all else.
- Die-cast metal bodies and frames
- Separately applied detail parts (handrails, grab irons, horns)
- Available in both 2-rail and 3-rail versions
- Some models include TMCC or DCC sound
- Typical price: $300–$700 for locomotives, $50–$90 for rolling stock
Atlas O Trainman Line
The Trainman Line is Atlas O's value tier. These models use more plastic construction and fewer separately applied details, but they maintain good scale proportions and are available in both 2-rail and 3-rail. Trainman is where Atlas competes on price with Lionel's traditional line and MTH's RailKing.
- Plastic bodies with some die-cast components
- Good scale proportions at a lower price point
- Available in both 2-rail and 3-rail versions
- Most models are non-sound (DC/AC powered)
- Typical price: $100–$300 for locomotives, $30–$55 for rolling stock

The MTH Tooling Partnership
One of the most significant developments in O gauge was Atlas's acquisition of approximately 70 MTH O scale tooling sets as part of MTH's 2021 restructuring. This means Atlas now produces some models using tooling originally designed by MTH — which was renowned for scale accuracy.
The partnership works both ways: when MTH produces a special release locomotive, Atlas may co-release matching freight cars using the shared tooling. For buyers, this means Atlas O products now include some of the finest O scale tooling ever created, and the combination of Atlas quality control with MTH-designed molds is a win for the hobby.
Atlas O Track
Atlas is one of the premier track manufacturers in model railroading. Their O gauge track offerings include:
- Atlas O 21st Century Track — nickel silver rail on brown ties with realistic profile. Available in both 2-rail and 3-rail. This is benchwork-mounted track (no integrated roadbed).
- Turnouts and crossings — Atlas makes some of the best O gauge turnouts available, particularly for 2-rail operators.
- Flex track — for custom curves and transitions, Atlas flex track is the standard in O scale.
Atlas O track is different from FasTrack and RealTrax in that it does not have integrated roadbed. It is designed for permanent layouts where the track is mounted to a table or benchwork. If you want snap-together track with roadbed for a floor layout or temporary setup, FasTrack or RealTrax is a better choice. For a permanent layout with realistic appearance, Atlas track is hard to beat.
Who Should Buy Atlas O?
Atlas O is ideal for:
- 2-rail O scale operators — Atlas is one of the few manufacturers with consistent 2-rail production. If you run 2-rail, Atlas is essential.
- Scale accuracy purists — Master Line models are among the most accurate O scale products available.
- Rolling stock collectors — Atlas rolling stock, particularly reefers, boxcars, and hoppers, is some of the best in the market for accurate lettering and proportions.
- Layout builders — Atlas track and turnouts are the foundation of many serious O gauge layouts.
You might look elsewhere if:
- You want built-in sound on every locomotive — Atlas sound offerings are more limited than Lionel Legacy or MTH Proto-Sound.
- You want app-based or Bluetooth control — Atlas does not have a proprietary control system like LionChief.
- You are building a temporary floor layout — Atlas track is designed for permanent installation.
Buying Tips
- Check 2-rail vs 3-rail carefully. Atlas sells the same model in both versions. Make sure you order the right one for your layout.
- Pre-orders matter. Atlas production runs are smaller than Lionel's. Popular road names sell out during the pre-order window. If you want a specific model, order early.
- Secondary market values are strong. Atlas O products, particularly Master Line, hold value well because of smaller production runs and strong demand from scale modelers.
- Mix and match. Atlas rolling stock runs beautifully behind Lionel or MTH locomotives. You do not need to commit to one brand for everything.
