Command Compatibility
How O gauge command-control systems relate to each other — and how command control differs from plain conventional running. This is an explainer to help you understand the landscape. It is not a verdict about any specific product.
The specific compatibility facts on this page were checked against owned manufacturer manuals and verified by a CommandWorks reviewer — but only within the limited scope described below. It is not a full feature matrix and not a per-product verdict. For a specific locomotive or layout, confirm with manufacturer documentation.

Command control vs. conventional running
Conventional running means controlling a locomotive by varying the power on the track with a transformer — typically one train at a time. Command control uses a digital signal so you can address locomotives individually, even on the same track, and trigger features like sound or couplers.
These are not the same thing, and the difference matters: a locomotive receiving power, or even running, is not necessarily command-compatible. Supplying power is not command control.
DCS, TMCC, and Legacy are systems, not remotes
A common confusion is to treat "DCS," "TMCC," and "Legacy" as if they were handheld remotes. They are not — they are command-control protocols / systems. The remotes, bases, and interface units are separate devices.
- DCS — MTH's command protocol and operating system.
- TMCC — Lionel's original command protocol.
- Legacy — a newer Lionel protocol that superseded TMCC and includes TMCC; Legacy adds expanded features beyond TMCC. Legacy and TMCC are related, not identical.
- Conventional — no command protocol; transformer power only.
Controllers, bases, and equipment paths
The actual hardware that sends command signals are devices such as the DCS TIU (Track Interface Unit) and WTIU, the DCS Remote and other DCS controllers, the Lionel TMCC Command Base, the Legacy Base, the CAB-2 controller, and bridge hardware like the LCS SER2. Which devices you need depends on the system and on what you are trying to do — and command features generally require the matching system's base or controller.
What can work across systems
Within the verified scope, these relationships hold:
- A Lionel Legacy Base can control TMCC engines and features (Legacy includes TMCC).
- DCS, TMCC, and Legacy are each established command-control protocols in their own ecosystems.
What only partially works
Some cross-system connections exist but are limited, and they depend on specific hardware. Within the verified scope:
- DCS to TMCC is one-way and requires an RS232/USB cable plus a TMCC Command Base — it is not full two-way integration.
- DCS to Legacy requires an LCS SER2 plus a PDI cable and reaches Legacy locomotives in TMCC command mode only — the expanded Legacy features are not available this way.
- DCS controllers can command Proto-Sound 2.0 (PS2) engines; it is the controllers (such as the TIU/Remote) that do the commanding.
A partial, limited, or hardware-dependent connection should never be read as a broad "it all works together" promise.
A note on MTH Proto-Sound
MTH locomotives use different onboard electronics. Within the verified scope: original Proto-Sound (PS1) was developed by QSI and is not DCS-command-controllable — a TIU can supply conventional power only, which is not command control. PS2 and PS3 are in-house MTH electronics used with DCS. Control specifics for PS3 beyond PS2 parity are not verified here and should be treated as "no verified evidence yet" rather than assumed. This page makes no claims about specific boards, revisions, or firmware.
Why we don't give a product-specific answer yet
To say whether a particular locomotive will work with your system, we would need to know what that locomotive actually is electronically — for example whether it carries PS1, PS2, or PS3, or a TMCC versus a Legacy receiver. TrainFinder does not yet hold that verified per-product electronics identity, and a brand or a product family does not reliably tell you the exact product's behavior. So rather than guess, we say unknown — which is protective, not a cop-out.
What TrainFinder has verified
The relationships above come from a limited set of manufacturer materials that were checked and confirmed by a CommandWorks reviewer — within that stated scope only. Areas such as transformers and power controllers, the full Legacy feature matrix, the full DCS app / WiFi behavior, and many controller and base variants are not yet covered and are treated as unknown.
